Especially the AO treatment on characters makes them look a lot less videogamey and more like an actual object, if that makes sense. It's not a huge difference and a few times I wasn't instantly sure if RT is on or off but toggling it off made it instantly obvious. There's less things that look 'wrong' due to being lit differently than the rest of the scene. To my eyes it looks like a significant improvement in image quality, especially in regards to AO treatment of fine geometry.
